Artist of the Month

Every month the Lower Macungie Library displays original framed artwork by a different member of the Parkland Art League.  Art exhibited is available for purchase.
Throughout the month of March, the library is featuring paintings by Maur Levan. Mr. Levan has studied drawing and oil painting at Cedar Crest College and Baum Art School.  He has also studied at Verrocchio Art Centre in Casole de Elsa, Italy.  In addition to being a member of the Parkland Art League, he is also a member of the Bethlehem Palette Club.  He has participated in the annual PA Senior Arts Festival at the Capitol Building in Harrisburg. His oil paintings range in subject from Monument Valley to Italy’s Tuscan fields to local pastoral scenes. For more information about the library or any of its “services beyond expectation,” please feel free to call (610) 966-6864 or visit us in person (3450 Brookside Rd.).

Lower Macungie Library Receives We the People “Created Equal” Bookshelf

The Lower Macungie Library is among the 3,000 nationally selected libraries to receive the 2008 We the People “Created Equal” Bookshelf, a collection of 17 classic books on the “Created Equal” theme.  This program, presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities, in cooperation with the American Library Association, encourages young people to read and understand great literature while exploring themes in American history.
Every generation of Americans has had the task of understanding the full meaning of the proposition that “All men are created equal” since it was first put forth as a “self-evident truth” by the Founding Fathers.  Through stories told in this year’s We the People Bookshelf students will have the opportunity to examine the central tenet of our American identity: that all human beings are “created equal.”  Each book chosen will engage young readers as well as their parents and teachers, and help young people learn more about events, people, places, and ideas in American history.
Of the 17 books the Lower Macungie Library has received, four are in Spanish translation and four are about Abraham Lincoln.  The Lincoln books are included in celebration of the approaching Lincoln Bicentennial in 2009 and it is the hope of the library that they will stimulate discussion and reflection among students on the contributions Lincoln made to our understanding of human equality.  All books received are currently on display within the library and are available for circulation.
