LOWER MACUNGIE LIBRARY WINS GRAND PRIZE IN NATIONAL CONTEST!

Lower Macungie Library is the Grand Prize winner of The History Channel’s Library Outreach Contest.  The contest was in conjunction with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and The President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.  Lower Macungie Library devoted its April programming to spotlighting the Space Program and the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 13 Space Mission. The Library partnered with several institutions to bring space science topics to the forefront:  The DaVinci Science Center loaned a number of items for display and the Lehigh Valley Amateur Astronomical Society (LVAAS) provided programming ideas and speakers.
On April 17th, a Space Party, complete with a Moon Landing cake was held in the library.  Attendees listened to the Apollo 13 story and created a “Planetary Adventure” bulletin board.  A “Star Party” was held on the library’s lawn and participants were able to view the Moon and several planets up close through telescopes.
Lower Macungie Library’s Mary Ann Tettemer, who as Project Coordinator submitted the entry, was notified by The History Channel that out of over 80 finalists, the library had been chosen as the Grand Prize Winner and will be receiving the $15,000 prize.

Friends of the Library

LML Has a Friends of the Library Group!
Lower Macungie Library has started a Friends of the Library group!  Friends are citizens who value the service of the library and are willing to volunteer to serve as “connecting links” between the library and the community.  This is your opportunity to help with keeping the library buoyant in a troubled economy!

The group meets the last Tuesday of every month in the Breezeway area of the Community Center, near the gym at 6:30pm. We invite all concerned about libraries and their endangered services to contact the library for information about the group by calling (610) 966-6864 or visit in person (3450 Brookside Road, Macungie) or online (www.lowermaclib.org).

A More Perfect Union

Lower Macungie Library Receives We the People “More Perfect Union” Bookshelf

The Lower Macungie Library is among 4,000 nationally selected public and school libraries to receive the 2010 We the People “More Perfect Union” Bookshelf. The Bookshelf is a collection of 17 classic books, plus bonus select Spanish language titles and the Ken Burns' award winning documentary, "The Civil War" as part of the “More Perfect Union” theme.  This, presented by the National Endowment for the Humanities, in cooperation with the American Library Association, encourages young people to read and understand great literature while exploring themes in American history. Each year, NEH identifies a theme important to the nation's heritage and selects books that embody that theme to build the We the People Bookshelf. Each book chosen will engage young readers as well as their parents and teachers, and help young people learn more about events, people, places, and ideas in American history.
This is the fifth consecutive year that LML has received this grant.  As soon as the collection is received, all books will be put on display within the library and be available for circulation.

Artist of the Month

Every month Lower Macungie Library displays original framed artwork by a different member of the Parkland Art League.  Art exhibited is available for purchase.
Throughout the month of July, the library is featuring paintings by Mary Ellen Stoyanov. Before retiring, Mrs. Stoyanov had taught elementary school, worked in a public library and a paper company lab.  Watercolor is her favorite medium.  She says “I love the way it blends and flows and sometimes does its own thing".
