The Lower Macungie Library now offers wireless, "Wi-Fi", access to the Internet throughout the building for properly equipped, patron-supplied laptops and their compatible wireless access cards. The library's Internet Access Policy applies to all Internet use in the building.

Please note: for liability reasons, the library cannot provide technical assistance nor touch your laptop or wireless card.

Advantages

  • You can access the Internet from different areas throughout the library.
  • There is no waiting or time limit.
  • You can download and save files on your own devices.

 

Limitations

  • Printing services and other software are not available via the wireless connection.
  • The signal strength may vary.
  • Library staff is unable to assist with laptops, cards or configuration.

 

Conditions

  • Virus, security, and privacy protection is the responsibility of the patron.
  • The library assumes no responsibility for any alterations or interference with a laptop's configuration, operation, or data files resulting from connection to the library's wireless network.
  • The library is not responsible for damage, theft, or loss of any kind to a user's equipment, software, data files, or personal property.
  • The library cannot guarantee that the service will be available at any specific time or that the connection will have any specific quality or speed.
  • The connection shall not be used for illegal or capacity-hogging purposes.
  • All library policies apply to wireless access users.

FAQs

Does the user have windows xp?

Windows XP most of the time is set up to automatically configure itself to recognized wireless networks. If you are having problems accessing the wireless network please refer to your wireless documentation.

Is the wireless card turned on?

Some laptop manufacturers will have a switch somewhere physically on the laptop that will allow you to turn on/off the wireless device in the laptop to conserve battery power. On Apple Macintoshs, it is software based and this can be done by clicking on the cone shaped symbol on the top task bar and choosing "Turn Airport On." Please consult any documentation they may have with the laptop to see if there is a switch on the laptop that will turn it on/off.

Is Norton Internet Security installed?

Norton Internet Security/Firewall has been known to cause problems with many wired/wireless connections to a network. Depending on what version they have the process to disable could be different. Please refer to the documentation that came with your Norton product. If for any reason you cannot disable Norton Internet Security please refer to their Technical Support section of their website, www.symantec.com/techsupp, or contact their technical support by phone.

Is Mcafee Internet Security installed?

Mcafee Internet Security/Firewall has been known to cause problems with many wired/wireless connections to a network. Depending on what version they have the process to disable could be different. Please refer to their support site at www.mcafee.com, or contact their Technical Support hotline.

Is Zone Alarm installed?

Zone Alarm has been known to cause problems with many wired/wireless connections to a network. Depending on what version they have the process to disable could be different.  Please refer to their website at www.zonelabs.com or contact their technical support by phone.

Is there a proxy in Internet Explorer?

If a proxy server is listed in the proxy connections it may prevent the user from accessing the login page to the wireless network. Please refer to your documentation regarding disabling the internet proxy.

Is Internet Explorer set to "Always dial"?

If a computer is set to auto dial to the Internet it may try to dial up to the Internet before being able to access a web page. This may prevent them from being able to access the login page.

The Lower Macungie Library is committed to the promotion of lifelong learning. As part of that commitment, the library will provide public access to the diverse and unique resources available via the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW).
 
Conditions and Terms of Use:
 
Information available via the Internet may be protected by copyrights or trademarks; use of such information must not violate any copyright or trademark law.
 
Because the Internet allows access to ideas, information and commentary from sources around the world, the library cannot control its content. Therefore, individual users must accept responsibility for determining the validity and accuracy of information located on the Internet.
 
The Internet and its available resources may contain material of a controversial nature. Parents and guardians, not library staff and volunteers, are responsible for the Internet information selected and/or accessed by their children. Viewing of certain materials in the public library may be considered improper and/or illegal in time, place or manner. The library reserves the right to discontinue the display of information and images which cause a disruption as well as reserving the right to contact the authorities in the event of illegal activities. Patrons are expressly prohibited from viewing sexually explicit material. *
 
At no time may any files/data be downloaded onto the library computers’ hard drives. Downloads to CD, floppy disk or thumb/flash drive is permitted. CDs and floppy disks are available at the circulation desk for $1.00. 
 
Exceptions to this policy may be made at the Library Director’s discretion.
 
Children and the Internet:
 
Parents or legal guardians must assume responsibility for deciding what library resources are appropriate for their own children. Parents/guardians should guide their children in the use of the Internet and inform them about materials they should not use. Library staff will seek to limit exposure of children to materials of an explicit sexual nature * through filtering of computers, monitoring use of Internet terminals when possible and intervening in online sessions when necessary. However, staff monitoring and filtering software do not offer absolute protections
