Last week, our Fun Day Friday looked at the rise of independent book stores and publishers. Today takes a step back and looks at the general trends of book consumers. This article by the Washington Post discuses a somewhat shocking trend that the “millennial” generation, those that were raised by digital technology, prefer reading print as compared to reading digital versions of the same text. Naomi S. Baron has been studying this trend and has recently published Words Onscreen: The Fate of Reading in a Digital World with her findings. “The most shocking statistic comes from Pew studies which show the highest print readership rates are among those ages 18 to 29.” Print publishers and electronic publishers will take these studies to heart. No one knows what the future holds, but there is one guarantee it seems everyone agrees upon: reading, in any form, is not going anywhere!
