A group of researchers from the University of Vermont recently
mapped out the emotional arcs of over 1,700 books and found that most of these novels followed one of six categories. Not only did they study the emotional journey of these books, but they also created graphs mapping out chunks of words that reflect the general feeling of each word. The word graph of Romeo and Juliet is available online and is plenty of fun to play around with! While there may be only six distinct emotional arcs, and only four types of conflicts, throughout the majority of books, there is still plenty of variety when it comes down to the finer details!
